What is Naturopathy?

Naturopaths treat the underlying cause and the whole patient, not just the symptoms. Their aim is to educate the patient and develop preventative measures to reduce recurrence. Naturopaths use herbal medicine, nutrition, dietary counselling, flower essence therapy, manual therapies, lifestyle education and homeopathy to treat illness, support healing and maintain health.

Naturopathy involves extensive history-taking, iridology, physical examination, evaluation of pathology tests, and naturopathic diagnosis to find the cause of the patient’s problem. All of the patient’s presenting symptoms are considered in relation to one another and to the patient’s emotional and mental state as the naturopath seeks to treat the whole person.

The Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy degree is a four year qualification.

What is Nutritional Medicine?

Nutritional medicine treats the whole person and aims to address the underlying cause by considering food and nutrients in relation to health and disease. Nutritionists look at the quality of food that is harvested, as well as its preparation and the balance of macro and micronutrients needed by an individual at various stages of life. Nutrition primarily focuses on modifying a person’s consumption patterns to promote the building of healthier tissues and the release of excess fat and toxins from the body.

Nutritionists inquire about the patient’s medical history and symptoms and are trained to conduct basic naturopathic and conventional screening and diagnosis in order to determine the needs of the client. Nutritional consultants may then create a plan that includes individualised recommendations for dietary changes intended to support health, as well as a regimen of nutritional supplements to correct clinical or functional deficiencies. They work with the patient to support them in adopting the changes and achieving desired outcomes.

The Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional Medicine) is a three-year qualification.

What is the Difference Between Nutritionists and Dieticians?

Both nutritionists and dieticians practice evidence-based medicine and hold the same overarching vision – better food, better health and wellbeing for all. However, the two practices draw on substantially different philosophies.

Nutritional medicine draws on a holistic approach to healing which takes into account the whole person – mind, body and spirit. Nutritionists recognise that disease is complex and is caused by a combination of factors. This constitutes individualised care which is the cornerstone of holistic practice.

Dieticians on the other hand are primarily trained to give evidence-based dietary advice to treat a range of conditions and translate scientific nutrition information into a tailored diet plan for each client to address their health goals.
